1 RAR is a key Australian Army unit formed in 1945, with a rich history of deployments in various conflicts and peacekeeping missions, including the Korean War, Vietnam War, Iraq War, and Afghanistan. 1RAR's mascot, Corporal Septimus, a Shetland pony stallion, was introduced in 1951 by Lt Col Ferguson DSO MC, the commanding officer at the time. Septimus, enlisted at the age of four, brought joy to the battalion until his passing in 1967. The name "Septimus" was chosen through a competition and has endured as the mascot's name.
