5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR) was raised at the Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney on 1 March 1965. It was comprised of surplus 1RAR soldiers and some of the first conscripts. The battalion arrived in Vietnam throughout April and May 1966. It formed half of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) with 6RAR. 1ATF replaced 1RAR in Vietnam and was stationed at Nui Dat in Phuoc Tuy province.
